The Military Assistance Command, Vietnam – Studies and Observations Group (MACV SOG) was one of the most classified and highly decorated special operations units in US military history. Operating from 1964 to 1972, MACV SOG conducted covert cross-border operations into North Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia — missions so secret that their existence was officially denied for decades. Composed primarily of US Army Special Forces (Green Berets) alongside South Vietnamese and indigenous personnel, SOG ran reconnaissance teams, direct action raids, prisoner rescues, and psychological operations deep behind enemy lines. The unit suffered extraordinarily high casualty rates and produced more Medal of Honor recipients per capita than any other unit of the Vietnam War.
