US Army uniform regulations authorize different tab formats depending on the uniform worn:

About the Special Forces Tab

The Special Forces tab is one of the most coveted and permanent awards in the US Army. To earn it, a soldier must complete the Special Forces Assessment and Selection (SFAS) and the Special Forces Qualification Course (SFQC or "Q Course") — a pipeline lasting 12 to 24 months that trains soldiers across five Special Forces MOSs: 18A (Officer), 18B (Weapons), 18C (Engineer), 18D (Medic), and 18E (Communications). Once awarded, the SF tab is worn for life on the uniform regardless of current assignment — a permanent mark of distinction as a US Army Green Beret.
