About the 1st Special Service Forces – The Devil Brigade

Activated in 1942 at Fort William Henry Harrison, Montana, the 1st Special Service Forces was a joint American-Canadian special operations unit unlike anything that had existed before. Trained in parachuting, skiing, rock climbing, and amphibious warfare, the Devil Brigade conducted some of the most audacious operations of WWII — including the assault on Monte la Difensa in Italy, where they scaled a near-vertical cliff face at night to overwhelm a heavily fortified German position. So feared were they by the enemy that German soldiers called them "Die Schwarzen Teufel" — The Black Devils. The 1st SSF is widely regarded as a direct predecessor to today's US Army Special Forces and Canadian Special Operations Forces Command (CANSOFCOM).
