About the Special Forces Tab

The Special Forces tab is among the most respected and recognizable pieces of insignia in the entire US military. To earn it, a soldier must pass the grueling Special Forces Assessment and Selection (SFAS) — a weeks-long evaluation of physical and mental endurance — and then complete the Special Forces Qualification Course (SFQC or "Q Course"), which can last anywhere from 12 to 24 months depending on specialty. The Q Course trains soldiers in one of five Special Forces Military Occupational Specialties: 18A (Officer/Commander), 18B (Weapons Sergeant), 18C (Engineer Sergeant), 18D (Medical Sergeant), or 18E (Communications Sergeant). Unlike most military qualifications, the Special Forces tab is a permanent award — once earned, it is worn for life on the uniform regardless of current assignment, making it one of the most enduring marks of distinction in the US Army.
